Google Wallet loyalty cards: how they work for food businesses
By the Loyalstack team · Updated · 5 min read
The short answer
A Google Wallet loyalty card is a digital stamp or points card saved in Google Wallet on an Android phone. Customers save it by scanning your QR code and tapping Save to Google Wallet, staff scan it at the counter to add stamps or points, and the card updates on the phone. Loyalstack issues the same card to Google Wallet and Apple Wallet, so iPhone and Android customers are both covered.
Around the world, a large share of phones run Android, and on Android the built-in place for passes and cards is Google Wallet. If your loyalty program only works on iPhone, you are leaving part of your regulars out. This guide explains how a Google Wallet loyalty card works for a café, bakery or restaurant, and how it compares with Apple Wallet.
What is a Google Wallet loyalty card?
A Google Wallet loyalty card is a digital pass saved in the Google Wallet app on an Android phone. It shows your logo and colours, the customer's progress (stamps or points), the next reward and a barcode or QR code that staff scan at the counter. It sits next to the customer's payment cards and boarding passes, so it is on hand at the moment they pay.
For the customer, there is nothing extra to install: Google Wallet comes with most Android phones.
How customers save it
- The customer scans your QR code on the counter, a table tent or your Instagram bio, or taps a link you shared.
- A short sign-up page opens in the browser. They enter their name and email.
- They tap Save to Google Wallet and the card is added.
On iPhone the same flow ends with Add to Apple Wallet. With Loyalstack, one QR code serves both: the customer chooses the wallet that matches their phone.
How stamps and points update
When staff scan the card, the stamp or points are added to the customer's account and the card in Google Wallet updates to show the new total. Staff can scan with the Loyalstack scanner in a browser on any phone or tablet, so you do not need new hardware.
Messages on the lock screen
Wallet cards can show notifications. With Loyalstack you can send a message to card holders, for example "Our autumn menu is here" or "Two more stamps until your free coffee", and it appears on their phone without an app. Keep messages useful and occasional; a message every week trains people to ignore you.
Google Wallet vs Apple Wallet
| Google Wallet | Apple Wallet | |
|---|---|---|
| Phones | Android | iPhone |
| How customers save the card | Save to Google Wallet button | Add to Apple Wallet button |
| App needed | No, built in | No, built in |
| Card updates after a scan | Yes | Yes |
| Lock-screen messages | Yes | Yes |
The practical answer for a food business is to support both. Your customers do not all carry the same phone, and asking someone to switch is not an option.
Do I need a developer to create Google Wallet passes?
Building passes yourself means working with Google's Wallet API, signing passes and keeping them updated. A loyalty platform does that for you. With Loyalstack you design the card once in the dashboard, and the customer gets it in Google Wallet or Apple Wallet, whichever their phone uses.
Getting started
Setup takes about 10 minutes: choose stamps, points or membership, add your logo and colours, set the reward and print your QR code. Loyalstack starts at $29/mo for one location with a 14-day free trial and no credit card required.
